Super Nova: Bright Moments in a Puppy Raiser’s Day
Raising a service puppy isn’t all snuggles and wagging tails—it’s a mix of love, patience, and the occasional rescue of a chewed-up shoe. For Brooke Bishop and her family, life with Nova, a spirited yellow lab puppy from Service Dogs Alabama (SDA), has been a whirlwind of joy, learning, and laughter.
Morning Mayhem (and Socks on Lockdown)
If there’s one thing Nova loves, it’s mornings—and breakfast. This early riser starts the day by bounding into action, tail wagging like a metronome set to “fast.” She’s got her priorities straight: food first, then playtime.
Once fueled up, Nova gets some outdoor time before launching into her favorite morning game: Den Wrestling Championships with her big brother, Beau, a five-year-old black lab. Meanwhile, Brooke and her husband, Alan, sip their coffee and referee from the sidelines.
As the kids, Kate and Lee, emerge from their rooms, Nova greets them like they’ve returned from a year-long voyage, showering them with tail wags and wet kisses. But when it’s time for shoes and backpacks, Nova takes a strategic kennel break. “It’s the only way to keep socks intact and shoes on the right feet,” Brooke jokes.
Walks, Workouts, and Training Triumphs
After the morning rush subsides, Nova and Brooke head out for a stroll through the neighborhood or Huntingdon College campus. These walks are equal parts exercise and education, as Nova takes in new sights, sounds, and smells—all crucial for her future role as a service dog.
Back at home, Nova shifts gears for training time. Brooke focuses on commands like “leave it” (a must for a curious pup) and helping Nova greet people calmly. “She loves everyone,” Brooke says, “but we’re working on her enthusiasm. Not everyone wants to be tackled by a furry hug machine.”
Afternoon Antics
When the kids return from school, Nova switches to full-on play mode. From backyard basketball to bike-riding adventures, Nova is right in the thick of it, proving she’s not just a future service dog but also a stellar teammate.
Evenings are family time, and Nova makes the most of it. Whether snuggling with Beau during TV time or helping Brooke supervise homework (read: snoozing nearby), she’s a constant source of love and entertainment.
The Heart of the Journey
Of course, raising Nova isn’t all puppy kisses and picture-perfect moments. She’s chewed a few beloved stuffed animals and tracked mud across freshly cleaned floors, but Brooke says the rewards far outweigh the frustrations.
“The most rewarding part is knowing Nova will change someone’s life one day,” Brooke shares. “She’s so smart and loving—it’s amazing to see her grow and think about the incredible companion she’ll become.”
Brooke’s children have also learned valuable lessons from Nova. One moment stands out: Brooke overheard her daughter saying, “I’m really going to miss Nova when she leaves. But she’s going to be the best friend to someone one day, and that’s more important.”
